Bruce Rogers Goes Cross-Country
In 1986, Bruce Rogers, a Pi Kappa Phi alumnus from Chi Chapter (Stetson), was attending law school at Duke University. When the idea to cycle across the country came to him, he decided to dedicate his ride to PUSH America. His fundraising consisted of a letter-writing campaign asking family and friends to support his ride instead of giving graduation gifts. Through this initiative, he raised more than $1,500. Rogers’ journey began on August 5, 1987, in Florence, Oregon, where he spent the next 47 days cycling. On September 21, 1987, his journey ended at the Victory Monument in Yorktown, Virginia. Little did he know that his idea would permanently ignite the largest fundraising and student participation project in the organization's history.
