Philanthropy and Pi Kappa Phi

The inaugural Journey of Hope team photographed before they embarked on their cross-country trip, laying a foundation for what would one day become The Ability Experience’s flagship event.
The First Journey of Hope
On June 13, 1988, a team of 21 cyclists, led by Karlovec, set off in San Diego, following a southern route across the country. On August 12, the team arrived in Washington D.C., with a police-led motorcade and cycled the final stretch to the west steps of the U.S. Capitol. The team celebrated with more than 200 family members, friends and Pi Kappa Phi brothers. The first Journey of Hope was officially deemed a success. Since then, teams of undergraduates and alumni have taken part in the cross-country journey. The team follows two routes starting from the West Coast, covering 8,000 miles in total. Along the way, participants make Friendship Visits to local partner organizations and engage with communities to raise awareness about disabilities. More than 2,000 Pi Kappa Phi brothers have participated in the Journey of Hope. Through team member fundraising and corporate sponsorships, the Journey of Hope raises more than $450,000 each year.
